Ruby Binns is a ceramic artist who finds solace and self-expression by getting her hands dirty with clay. From an early age, she discovered the therapeutic power of tactile materials and throughout her life, careers, and three children, this creative outlet had become increasingly important. Over the past decade, Ruby has honed her pottery skills through classes, workshops, and adventurous experimentation.

Unlike other art mediums, ceramics possess a wildness that captivates Ruby's artistic spirit. The artist's control over the clay is influenced by various factors, and the chemical mysteries and enchantment of glazing and firing further enhance the process. Ruby's inner child's curiosity is indulged as she explores experimental materials and techniques, fostering a sense of wonder and discovery.

Currently, Ruby employs a combination of wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create functional pottery. Her focus lies on crafting vessels that embody the intricate beauty of nature. Throughout the construction process, she keeps the essence of nature at the forefront of her mind. Drawing inspiration from clay's origin in the earth, Ruby allows the material to influence her pieces. She experiments with locally sourced clay from building sites, backyards, and riverbanks, allowing rain and water to shape and pattern her creations. To add further depth and interest, Ruby incorporates crushed glass recycled from local wine bars and ash collected from nearby fireplaces into her glazes. She also incorporates recycled materials, such as leftover coffee grinds from local cafes, to add texture to clay bodies.

As an artist, Ruby is committed to working in a more sustainable manner and employing locally sourced and recycled materials. She firmly believes in forging a connection between her pieces and the local community, as well as the land upon which we reside. Furthermore, Ruby's eco-conscious approach aims to minimize her environmental impact, leaving a lighter footprint on the Earth.
